1) DD4D Data Designed for Decisions
Paris, 18-20 June 2009
WEBSITE: http://www.dd4d.net/DD4D.aspx
CALL FOR PAPERS: http://www.dd4d.net/Call-for-Speakers.aspx
Deadline for abstract: December 12, 2008
THEMES:
We base our decisions on our own experience, gut-feeling, social
pressure, cultural environment, economic circumstance or habit
just as much if not more than on actual data available. Whether
we distrust data or we are persuaded by it depends to some
extent on who it is presented by and how it is presented.
Data tells its own story, but it needs intermediaries to find
it, to visualise it, to communicate it, to help understand it
and act on it.
- Finding the Story: In this session we would like to explore
how the story begins. Those who research, who explore, who
document and collect. And who can see the bigger picture.
They are the first link in the chain of communication and
understanding.
- Telling the Story: A classic topic for all those who
visualise and communicate data. DD4D will also look beyond
visual representation at the connection with the main
storytellers of our age, the media.
- Living the Story: This is where we find out whether and how
the story is working for the user. How people use and interact
with data, how it can support groups and individuals to make
decisions. This is a conference for intermediaries between data,
knowledge and empowerment.
We will investigate selection, visualisation, interpretation
and communication of data, and how it can be effectively used to:
* help understand complex issues,
* make data relevant at a personal level,
* close the gap between objective measurement and perception, and
* take decisions based on evidence.

IIID - International Institute for Information Design

OECD - Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

2) Information Design Conference 2009
Greenwich, April 2-3, 2009
WEBSITE: http://www.infodesign.org.uk/2009-conference/
CALL FOR PAPERS:
http://www.infodesign.org.uk/2009-conference/call.php
Deadline for abstract: December 31, 2008
THEMES:
Since the 1980s, the Information Design Conferences have been a
great place to discuss and debate information design the next
event will take place on 2-3 April 2009 in London, organised by
the Information Design Association. We see Information Design as
a broad field that encompasses work in graphic communication,
interface design and information architecture, technical writing,
and wayshowing, among other areas. Submissions can touch on
practice or research on any topic, including:
* government and administration
* healthcare and health promotion
* technical instruction and user guides
* reference and learning materials
* transport information and signage
* forms and transaction interfaces
* financial and billing information
The Programme Committee are particularly keen to see submissions
based on:
* case studies from design practitioners which offer
generalisable conclusions, methods and ideas; and
* research studies that provide evidence which can be
acted on by designers in practice.
But, whatever your focus, we'll be glad to hear from you with
any ideas related broadly and imaginatively to advancing the
field of Information Design. As before, we are not focusing
on any particular theme, such as education or health... though
we will nurture and shape themes, if they seem to have emergent
value.
